Aang is a twelve year old who was raised by monks at the Air Temple, growing up with their teachings and learning to airbend (basically bending meaning he was learning to control a certain element) He unfortunately didn't take well to being told he would be the Avatar (the one who would master all four elements of bending - air, water, earth and fire). He ran away, ending up lost and freezing himself and Aapa (his flying sky bison bff) to keep them safe during a storm, and was frozen for a hundred years. He awakens to find there's a war that was raging for this whole time, that his monks who raised him, his friends he grew up with, were all gone, killed by the Fire Nation. He is awakened by friends he meets, Sokka and Katara, and is also joined by Toph later on. He journeys in finding Masters to teach him each of the other elements of bending to be strong enough to defeat the Fire Lord, essentially.
Personality-wise, he's fun-loving, cheeky in teasing and playing games. He's young, and this shows in his personality and tendency to run from his problems. He's very fiercely protective of his friends and is plenty capable in a fight. But he does feel guilty sometimes when he messes up, and he can admit when he is wrong. He feels a lot of responsibility and expectation of his being the Avatar, feels a huge guilt in running away and not being around during the war for so long. He does have survivor's guilt in being the only one of the Airbenders who survived the attack on their temple and all.
